Five things you need to know today
Filmhouse reopens, Filmhouse reopens, Filmhouse reopens, Filmhouse reopens, Filmhouse reopens
Filmhouse is opening the doors
Filmhouse opens to the public on Friday morning at 10am. The cinema with its café and bar has been much missed in the last two and a half years.
A new body was set up to take it over, oversee the £2 million refurbishment and now at last allow the cinema going public in to see the beautiful new seats and screens.
Will you be there? - either to see a film or have a coffee? (or nachos?) Many people have already signed up for memberships.
This is just one example of the excellent programming which Filmhouse used to offer - and will again.
On Saturday there is a showing of The Adventures of Prince - a 1926 paper cut animation with a live performance by local band, S!nk. Suitable for all ages.
"S!nk are honoured and overjoyed to return to the all-new Filmhouse for this very special live performance of their original multi-instrumental score to Lotte Reiniger’s classic 1926 feature length paper cut animation.
"Swirling, spiralling strings, saxophones, accordion, percussion and voice transport you to a world of conjurors and princesses, where Aladdin battles demons and nothing is as it seems. The score was originally commissioned by Filmhouse who collaborated with S!nk to tour the Highlands and Islands to critical acclaim. It's great to be home again."
Critical Mass - the West End Wiggle
If you have a bike or a scooter then join the West End Wiggle on Saturday - meet the Edinburgh edition of the global active travel movement as usual at 2pm at Middle Meadow Walk.
Monkeys our Primate Family opens tomorrow at the museum
The biggest exhibition of primate behaviour ever staged returns to the National Museum of Scotland this weekend. From huge gorillas to tiny mouse lemurs, Monkeys: Our Primate Family (28 Jun - 30 Nov 2025) explores the remarkable lives of our closest relatives.
The exhibition first opened at the National Museum of Scotland in 2016 before embarking on an international tour. It returns to Edinburgh for a final time having been seen by over 500,000 visitors in six countries around the world.
Professor Andrew Kitchener, Principal Curator of Vertebrate Biology at National Museums Scotland, said:
“We are all primates, but how much do we really know about our extended family? Following a successful global tour, this is the last chance to experience this remarkable exhibition. Monkeys: Our Primate Family provides a unique opportunity to see these fascinating animals up close. Visitors will also learn about the threats facing primates and what we can do to protect them.”
